In 1974, the Swedish photographer and journalist Mikael Wiström travelled across Peru. While he was taking pictures of a rubbish dump where poor people were trying to eke out a meagre living, a young man whose body was deformed by polio asked him what he was doing with his expensive camera. Between this Daniel Barrientos and the photographer, a special yet vulnerable friendship developed. In 1991, Wiström has become a filmmaker and returns to Peru for the first time, where Daniel and his wife and four children are still barely making ends meet. The film COMPADRE was made last year, almost thirty years after the first encounter between the two men. It combines the computer-animated photographs from 1974 and footage from the film THE OTHER SHORE from 1993 with images of today. The filmmaker not only documents the daily life of Daniel's family, but also involves the spectator in this great dilemma of the rich Western filmmaker being confronted with dire poverty, an existential inequality that puts great pressure on the friendship. Wiström may call Daniel his brother, but how far does his “fraternal” responsibility extend? [less]

In "the old days", Antonio's function in life was exterminate these bandits, on account of his personal grudges against them. His life had been meaningless for the last 29 years, but now, a new challenge awaits him. When a Cangaceiro appears in Jardim Das Piranhas, the local Land Baron (Jofre Soares), an old man, does what seems obvious to him: he calls Antonio das Mortes, killer of Cangaceiros. At first, Antonio is ecstatic. His life has gained new meaning. But soon it becomes obvious that this new Cangaceiro (named Coirana) is no Corisco, but an idealist. An idealist of the sixties in the garb of the forties. A leader to the hopeless and the hungry. Antonio das Mortes begins to reconsider his feelings towards Coirana and his followers... [less]

This is the third release in Terra’s series, Spotlight on Chilean Masterworks. Silvio Caiozzi, now one of Chile's foremost directors, made Julio comienza en Julio under the Pinochet dictatorship when there was little production. In spite of that, the film has emerged as a timeless Latin American classic, beautifully composed with evocative sepia tones, astonishing locations, and lush sets that alone would ensure its survival. Set in 1917, this feature tells of a boy’s coming-of-age amongst the aristocratic, conservative, decadent upper classes. Julio Garcia Castano is a powerful, imperious landowner who is attempting to mould his son, also named Julio, in his own image. On the boy’s 15th birthday, he organizes a party and invites the local hookers over to "make a man of him." The plan misfires when young Julio falls in love with one of the girls, precipitating the ruthless intervention of Julio senior. Don Julio is ruthless as well in his dealings with the local church. His family once donated land to a neighboring monastery, but now Don Julio wants it back. Caiozzi’s atmospheric film effectively treats issues of social class, sex, religion and family. Selected for Cannes in 1979, Julio was named "Best Chilean Film of the Century" by the Municipality of Santiago in 1999. Directed by Silvio Caiozzi. Originally released in 1979. Spanish with English subtitles. 120 minutes. [less]

{Award of Excellence -- Society for Visual Anthropology 2006 }{Grand Jury Award, Best Documentary -- Miami Film Festival 2005}{Special Mention, Best Documentary -- Slamdance Film Festival 2005 }{Best Documentary-- IFP Market 2004 }La Sierra is a barrio in Medellin, Colombia-- the cocaine capital of the world. Here, lives are defined by drugs, guns and violence. A state of perpetual urban warfare exists, with paramilitary gangs, leftist guerrillas and the US-sponsored Colombian military battling continually for power and control. The award-winning documentary LA SIERRA explores life in the barrio over the course of one year through the prism of three young lives.Edison, aka "The Doll," is a paramilitary commander in La Sierra. At the age of 22, he is the de facto mayor of the neighborhood and father to six children by six different women. Though openly dedicated to and excited by his life of violence, Edison is an intelligent and charismatic young man. As we follow him through the conflict, its victories and setbacks, he shares his dreams for himself and his children and explains his attachment to what he calls "my war."Cielo, age 17, was displaced from the countryside as a young child when her brother and father were murdered by guerillas. A mother at the age of 15, she was widowed when the father of her son (a gang member) was killed. Now Cielo is devoted to a new boyfriend, a paramilitary, who she visits in jail every Sunday. Jesus, 19, is a mid-level paramilitary member. Badly wounded when a homemade grenade blew up in his hands and face, Jesus presents himself as ready for death at any moment, regularly indulging in marijuana and cocaine. LA SIERRA is an intimate, unflinching portrait of three lives defined by violence and a community wracked by conflict. Over the course of a year these lives, and the life of the barrio itself, undergo profound changes, experiencing victory, defeat, hope, despair, love and death. Entering a world where few journalists dare to venture, filmmakers Scott Dalton and Margarita Martinez reveal not only startling moments of violence and its aftermath, but also those of tenderness and faith that give the community hope for survival. 2008    69 minutes    No. Discs: 1    (Icarus Films)

Santiago de Lucanamarca, a remote farming community in the Peruvian Andes, is shaken by the presence of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. They have come to open the tombs of the 69 people who died in the massacre of April 3, 1983. Twenty years later there is a chance to close old wounds, but distrust can also be felt in the streets of the town. Aren't we all Peruvians? asks one of the people affected. The history of Lucanamarca shows us how elusive justice can be.
