About the book: a boy from siklis: the life and times of chandra gurung a remarkable potrait of a modern-day hero, his nation and his legacy in late september 2006, chandra gurung organized an event in remote ghunsa village in eastern nepal to celebrate a landmark in the countrys conservation history: the handover of the ownership of forest areas by the government to local inhabitants. The handover also marked the apex of chandras career as an environmentalist. On the way back from ghunsa, the helicopter ferrying chandra and others crashed, killing everyone aboard. A boy from siklis traces chandra gurungs remarkable life-his birth in the tiny village of siklis; his education in nepal and abroad; his work, first with the king mahendra trust for nature conservation and then as head of the world wildlife fund nepal-and his meteoric rise as he became one the keystones of nature-conservation efforts in nepal. A compelling story of a life lived with verve and an honest desire to make a lasting difference, a boy from siklis is also a valuable and illuminating history of nature conservation in nepal, caught up in the countrys thorny politics. About the author: manjushree thapa manjushree thapa is one of south asias best-known writers. She has written two novels, seasons of flight and the tutor of history; a collection of short stories, tilled earth; and three books of non-fiction: the lives we have lost: essays and opinions on nepal, forget kathmandu: an elegy for democracy and mustang bhot in fragments. Manjushree thapa divides her time between kathmandu and toronto. [less]

A thrilling coming-of-age story that is set in the Pakistan of Zia and Bhutto. 'God was everywhere, but so was the general'. It is the summer of 1977 and Pakistan swelters in the unrelenting heat. Weeks after her eleventh birthday, Aliya Shah wakes up to the news that there has been a coup d'etat, General Zia has taken over the country and Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is in jail. Although the shadow of the general and his increasingly puritanical edicts threaten to disrupt their comfortable existence, life goes on for Aliya much as before as she attends the American School in Islamabad. However, when a much loved young boy, the son of the family retainer, dies tragically in a hit-and-run accident, her world is turned upside down, especially when she discovers the terrible secret of the murderer's identity. City of Spies is coming-of-age story that explores Aliya's conflicting loyalties and her on-going struggle to make sense of her world. Set in late 1970's Islamabad and Lahore, City of Spies is a gripping novel that unfolds over thirty months in Pakistan's tumultuous history. This delicate political novel evokes the sights and smells of the Pakistan of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and General Zia. We are inside the head of a child, spying on her past. I read this novel as the story of another schoolgirl in Pakistan, a different Malala. This Malala unmasks a whole landscape of feeling. Amitava Kumar, author of 'Husband of a Fanatic'. [less]

Diksha at St. Martin's

Siddharth Chowdhury

2002    156 pages    (Imprint unknown)

ISBN 13: 9788187075981    ISBN 10: 8187075988

The cities of Patna and Delhi are separated by 700 miles. The stories in this collection reflect the socio-cultural ramifications of such a geographic anomaly. These are, with few exceptions, stories of youth, love and loneliness and the attendant joy, alienation and heart break which comes along as a package deal. All the stories in this darkly comic and often whimsical collection thrive on a steady diet of subversion and dry wit.
